Mozilla Firefox 0.8 的 Debian 套件終於在 sid 出現，離 Firefox 正式推出差了十六日 (backports.org 比 sid 還要快) 。 0.8 好像 clean 點快一點，但我還未安好 extension, 所以不能作準。

這個包把 Firefox 的 profile 目錄由 ~/.phoenix 改成 ~/.firefox ，所以以前用 0.7 的朋友會發改舊的 profile 如 版面, theme, bookmark 等都沒有移植過來。 聽說這個版本 upgrade 沒有那麼 smooth, 所有關 maintainer 索性改了位置。Firefox 官方也叫人最好另建一個新 profile 及重安所有 extensions。另外 mozilla-tabextensions, 等一大堆 extensions 及 flash/acrobat reader 等 plugins 的 debian 套件還未升級配合 firefox 的新位置，這幾點大家要留意。

要把舊 profile 移上 0.8 的朋友, 可以先跑一次 0.8 等她在 ~/.firefox 建好新 profile 後，把所有 firefox 關掉。再從 ~/.phoenix/default/xxxxxxxx.slt (xxxxxxxx是由隨機產生的字元組成, 以保帳私隱) 找出下列檔案覆寫過去 ~/.firefox/default/xxxxxxxx.slt:

• user.js 及 pref.js
• bookmark.html
• cookies.txt 及 cookperm.txt
• key3.db 及 signons.txt

要將預設 browser 改成 firefox ， 先入 root 帳戶，打 "update-alternatives –list x-www-browser" 看到 /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox 的名字後，打 "update-alternatives –set x-www-browser /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox" 就可以了。

My progress of LoTR is very slow recently coz I’m busy on Gnome 2.6 translation and Stardict Debian Package in these recently news. To help to standardize the translation, I spend a few hours to write a PO searching engine which allow people to see how others translate the same terms.

GTK+ 的檔案選擇對話方塊有新設計。感覺上比前清簡，也吸收了之前 OSNews 的一些建議。Federico及JRB正在實現這個新設計，期望這個檔案選擇對話方塊可以早點在正式版 Gnome 出現。

Yet another color test. Interesting. But I just think how much will the test be affected by doing the test on an CRT monitor and an LCD monitor? I do it on my notebook.

來自 Adam Kessel’s blog 的一則趣事。大概很多人都有留意早前 微軟視窗的源碼被漏的新聞。有位朋友就在那段期間啟動了一個 Linux 2.6.2 的 BitTorrent ，並一事慶起改了個名字叫 "Kernel source here" 。這個 torrent 被啟動後不到幾個小時就吸引到過六百個下載者。然而，第二天一清早，該位朋友就發現他的寬頻被其 ISP 截斷了。原因是微軟寄了封電郵給其 ISP 懷疑他非法散播"視窗"的源碼!?

Ok, may be somebody will notice that *.hk.debian.org, *.debian.org.hk and *.linux.org.hk had down for over 8 hours yesterday. Coz they are the same server and down due to disk crash. (Actually the disk still fine now but I have no time to wrote a detail report on what happen eactlly)

To bring up the server, I had rush to to the datacenter immediately after I back home from Zhuhai without having meal and pay neally HK$200 taxi fee to back home while I need to back office earlier today. Sigh…… I really hope that I can ask someone to pay the traffic fee for me.

So, what make the disk crash? And did anything find *.hk.debian.org is terrible slow these few month. (ok, it may never be fast for you) But I really find the oversea network performance dropped unresaonablely these few month. When I stop all anon ftp servers, the speed become fast again. With the help of some network monitoring tools, I found FTP service occupied over 90% of the bandwidth and most downloader are not hong kong people but from Mainland and Taiwan. Many of them occupy several connection. Although we can’t prove the disk crashs (it is not the 1st in Feb 2004) is caused by those ftp hammering. (How could network bandwidth is larger then the harddisk bandwidth), we can concluded that those flashgetter had already occupied most oversea bandwidth of my server and strongly affect it’s normal operation.

I didn’t mean that mainland and taiwan people are not welcome to use my server. But I can’t accept somebody abusing my contribution, taken the chance of others and harm my server. I pay over thousands HKD per month for the internet connections of the server voluntary without asking any reward. I’m not rich. But I always try my best to do anything that can help the Free software community.

Apart from my own toys, the major mission of this server is provide a complete Debian mirror for hong kong people (I had pay much for the harddisk to mirror the whole debian archive). Website for HKLUG and DebianHK are also important. I’m not blaming anyone here but I would like to say I’m taking serious on it and will change the policy soon.

Mainland and taiwan people can still access us but HK will have a higher priority. Flashgetter is never been welcome here and will be block without notices. Some limitation will be applied on non Debian official stuff and CD-ROM image file. All is aimed to keep the major service round smoothly.

If you can share some bandwidth to share the bundles of us (I mean those *noppix ISO image), drop me a mail and I can provide a channel for you.

I finally make the gnome-blog can work with the Blogger API of debian.org.hk. And it make the blogging much easier. If you are using gnome-blog, just choose "Self-Run Other" for Blog Type, "BloggerAPI" for blog protocol, "http://www.debian.org.hk/xmlrpc.php" for XML-RPC URL and then your username & password of debian.org.hk.

I have spend sometime on HKLUG website yesterday. I plan to use drupal again for HKLUG. And now test1.linux.org.hk is on for development and testing. I wrote test seveal color themes and everyone can see them via chosing "Use Style" from mozilla.

I had planned to wrote sth about Linux 2.6 while I have played it for a while (since Dec 20) and using 2.6.2 since last week. I haven’t much time to test it but it sounds work with most of my devices including MP3 Player and Palm. But the connection of the above devices may not work well after hiberation.

My progress on LoTR is pretty slow. I have already finished the book I (that Frodo reach Rivendell) before the lunar new year. But I spend some time to read the chinese version of the Book I to re-cap some detail that I miss. ;P I just finish the chapter IV of Book II, A Journey in the Dark. Now they are being attacked by orcs and troll in Moria. Ho, the fall of gandralf is near.
